Sunset Produce LLC, a family owned corporation was formed by two brothers Robert and Duane Munn. Lorin Munn their father started farming near Ogden, Utah raising sugar beets and cattle along with his wife Fay and their young family. Both Robert and Duane grew up working the Utah farm with their Dad. In 1954, Lorin and Fay moved their family to the Eastern Oregon/Idaho area to expand their farming enterprise. Their farm eventually grew to encompass 1820 acres including their first 20 acres of onions grown in 1965 which was a test year for this new crop. They enjoyed success growing onions and the acreage has grown each year since that time.
In 1976, the family had an opportunity to move to Eastern Washington where new land was available to develop under irrigation. Today Sunheaven Farms LLC stands as a beacon for first class large scale irrigated farming with nearly 25000 acres under cultivation.
R. Munn Farms LLC consists of Robert and Larna Munn (now retired), and their three sons Randy, Ryan and Rob. Randy has three grown sons, Derrick, Spencer and Ricks, that also farm with their dad, so the fourth generation is continuing a successful history and 2019 will be their 56th year as onion growers. Ryan is a licensed CPA and handles the financial and accounting functions. R. Munn Farms encompasses approximately 4600 acres with 1300 acres of onions for Sunset Produce, and they grow shallots to complement the onions. Other crops grown include sugar beets, carrots, turf grass seed, wheat, peas and beans. They have also been proactive in developing and implementing a bio-nematicide program with good results and continue to research natural alternatives to reduce the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides.
Duane Munn and Sons Farms LLC is now owned and operated by Duane and Susan Munn, and their son Shane and his family, including his son William who wants to follow in his dad’s footsteps as well. Both families are fourth generation farmers now. Duane and Shane farm approximately 6000 acres with 2300 acres of onions for Sunset Produce. In addition to onions they also grow wheat, corn, turf grass seed, carrots and maintain a commercial cattle herd. This will also be the 56th year of onion production for them as well.
One of the notable aspects of the success of these farms is the hands on day to day management that each family member provides. They all grew up on a farm and know every aspect and detail of what is required to grow the very best quality crops possible. There's a good chance that if you're driving on the farm and pass a pickup, truck, tractor or road grader, it's one of the owners, so be friendly and wave. If anyone needs to see the growers during the day we find out which field they are in and that is where we meet.
